IIIMarch, 2011

On March 23rd through 26th, I had the opportunity of participating in this program both as a member of the Asheville Area Riverfront Redevelopment Commission and as a design professional - providing design input in support of the visioning process.

Between the Bridges, a pilot planning process, focused on revitalization challenges of a section of Asheville's River Arts District situated along the French Broad River between the Smokey Park and Riverlink Bridges. In this case study for identifying opportunities and constraints to sustainable redevelopment, participants explored ideas of how to transform sites - which are identified as brownfields, underutilized, and vacant or deteriorating - into market-ready sites which can attract potential redevelopment.

The event, which occurred over four days in late March, brought together property owners, members of the community, City staff, planners, architects, jurisdictional officials, and transportation representatives - all with the focus of working together to create understanding, develope connections with policy makers and business and property owners, and present conceptual ideas for transformational revitalization of the study area.

Three sites were the primary focus:

The Stockyards at the northern end of the study area on the west side of the French Broad River, The Hatchery directly across the river from the Stockyards, and The Asheville Ice Plant at the southern end of the study area. Below are sketches of some of the ideas developed.
